Turtle Time

I want to shout out the Potomac Valley Audubon Society in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.  They have some excellent educational programs that are all free or very affordable.  We were lucky enough to attend a few events during our winter trip to WV.  Each activity was well-run; the instructors were patient and knew their stuff.  All the educators had obvious training in handling large groups of young children.  I have taught in a kindergarten before.  I know how difficult groups of little ones can be, especially when they are all excited.

We attended the Turtle Time in early February.  For an hour, the instructors talked about turtle facts while feeding the turtles at Cool Spring Preserve near Charles Town. It seemed that many of the children were homeschooled kids because they knew each other and some of the instructors.  It makes sense for homeschooling to let proper environmental educators teach some biology and science classes.  Although named Turtle Time, the highlight of the event was the snake feeding.  Watching the snake unhinge its jaw to swallow a frozen mouse is always an impressive sight.

The Cool Spring Preserve area is a nice spot.  Behind the nature center is a play area with some picnic tables.  After Turtle Time, all the kids went outside to play.  We had brought our picnic materials and ate lunch before heading out.  There are also some trails on the property which we did not have a chance to explore.  It was a bit cold and the trails were muddy.  Next time we visit West Virginia the weather should be warmer and we will see more of the area.

The only downside to Turtle Time is that it is on a weekday (reinforcing my idea that it is mostly for homeschooled children).  The nature center is not large.  Perhaps there would not be enough space if events were held on the weekend.  PVAS has other events happening on weekends which seem more applicable to the general public.  The organization even offers summer camps for grades K-12.  Check out their calendar to see what is happening.  I was very impressed with their setup and overall professionalism.  Anyone who has kids and wants to learn more about nature should look at PVAS or your local Audubon Society chapter.
