Let’s Go Outside! from Cornell

Today I finished the Let’s Go Outside! How to Connect Kids with Birds and Nature hosted by The Cornell Lab BirdAcademy. Anyone who wants to get young children outside more often will benefit form the course. Of all the ways I could have spent an afternoon, this was one of the best.

The best part of the course is the wonderful list of “Try It!” activities. Each activity is simple enough that any adult can implement with children, no special training is required. One example is the “Rainbow Walk,” where a child chooses a color and observes the color in nature as often as as they can.

The course provides lots of insights how parents can change mindsets to get more out of the trips outside. I am looking forward to the weather turning warmer to spend more time implementing all the activities with my son. The activities are recommended for children ages 6-10. Although my son is still in preschool, I think he will be able to effectively engage with many of the activities.
