I recently came across a copy of the More or Less card game even though it’s a UK exclusive. In my continuing quest to jam games into my clases, I found a fun way to incorporate it into my AP Research course.
First, More or Less is an extremely simple party game. One side of each card has four questions that compare two things. For example, “Is Australia’s land area more or less than Brazil’s?”. On the backs are the answers with the figures. “Less. Australia had a land area of 7.8 million square kilometers which is less than Brazil’s 8.51.”
Unfortunately, the game doesn’t cite any sources, which is why students should get involved. Students can use these facts to practice writing bibliographies. They choose a fact or that interests them and find a source that corroborates the information and write the citation.
Extension Activity 1: After finding a popular source such as a website, students should find an academic paper or book that also corroborates the card’s fact. They can write a citation for this paper to see how differently types of sources are cited.
Extension Activity 2: If a student is doing their own research project (such as in AP Research) they can write their own “more or less” questions. If a student wants to research the future of electric vehicles they could ask something like, “Are there more or less Teslas on the road now than all other EVs combined?”. Since the card needs an answer, they must find that information and cite their sources appropriately. For AP Research in particular, this can be an early activity during the initial inquiry phases where students are trying to battle their research topic into a manageable question.
