Spot It! Adjectives

Spot It!, also known as Dobble, is a matching game where players look at two circular cards and need to identify which object is on both cards.  Each card shares exactly one object with every other card.  The game comes in a variety of themes to match the intended audience.

Spot It! can help ELL students practice speaking and using adjectives differently.  A straightforward exercise involves differentiating between attributive and predicate adjectives.  One way these types of adjectives differ is that, when spoken, attributive adjectives rarely use “and” in a list while predicate adjectives do.  “I see a big, green apple.”  “The apple is big and green.”

Another exercise involves adjective order.  Many native English don’t know why “I see a green, big apple” is incorrect, but they know it is wrong when they hear it.  There are many Spot It! images and lots of opportunities for ELL students to practice this order.  This exercise is easily differentiated by asking stronger students to string together long lists of adjectives.
