The roadblock at our school is the local education authorities. In many ways our area is quite conservative and technology is no different. Students of all ages are not allowed to have phones on campus. Only students in grades 11 and 12 may have a laptop on campus with their parents’ permission. As a result, relying on technology is difficult for the teachers.
We have developed small work-arounds to these restrictions. None of us is so dumb to believe the students do not have their phones and computers in their dorm rooms. The school administration knows the students have their devices. The school administration knows the teachers know the students have their devices. But we can not act like we know those devices are on campus without running afoul of the local education department. We have a computer lab which gets lots of use by teachers. Assignments that need computer access are always due on Mondays or Tuesdays so the students can do the work at home on the weekends. It is not an ideal situation, but we all do our best to work within the restrictions. However on a positive note, it is nice not to need to ask students to put their phones away every lesson. We are supposed to confiscate their phones and give them to the principal for a month if we see them, so students leave their devices in their homerooms or dorms.
